Qtaki News.

The following items of news from Otaki and district are culled from the Mail:—

Odliu's mill at lieikioraiigi closes about the 22nd of this month. it is understood that Mr Sims, the manager, will move the plant to the Main Trunk, where totara will be cut. Great interest is being taken in tke Christmas Festival for native children to be held at the Otaki Town Hall on Thursday next. The proposal which emanated from Nurse Lewis, has been taken up with much enthusiasm, and a very large and happy gathering is anticipated. It as expected that over three hundred Maori children from all parts of the district will be entertained. A party of some twenty Wellington students, headed by Mr Tennent, was to have made an ascent of the Tararuas from Otaki at the end of last week, but owing to the threatening weather the trip was deferred. There is every probability of a number of people visiting the mountains from Otaki this summer. Manakau residents are proud of the fact that three points prizes at the Otaki show were won by Manakau residents —Mrs Nees, cut blooms; Mrs 13 urn ell, domestic, Mrs L. Atkiifs, decorations. Well done, Manakau? There will be more competitors from Manakau at next show. For the first time for years, the cookery exhibits at the Otaki Show last week were not enclosed with wire-netting. There was difference of opinion among the show officials as whether this was a wise step or not, but it is pleasing to know that there was practically no interference with the exhibits, though some certainly must have made the boys' mouths water.
