Levin Flower Show

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Levin Horticultural Society's Summer Show was held yesterday aJternoon and evening, In the Century ilall. The most striking feature oi the show was the sweet pea class. In this division some magnificent blooms were shown by Mr Westaway, oi Te lioro: splendidly shaded blossoms on strikingly large stems. Poses have s uttered to some extent by the season, but some good blooms weic on. exhibition, notably those of Mr Frank Pcnn, of Otaki, and Mr \V. 11. Gunning, of Shannon. Some very pleasing effects were obtained in the decorative classes, and notably so in the mantlepieces. Cookery, and domestic produce such as honey, butter, eggs and sauces evoked numerous entries. A baker's dozen of cakes, pics and scones (done in a gas slove and cooked to a nicety) formed a good advertisement for Levin municipal gasworks. Vegetables had been helped forward by the propitious rains of the last three months, and the result is seen in the excellence of potato, cauliflower, cabbage and other edible growths. The show was opened by Mr .Fames Prouse, president of the Levin Horticultural Society, who

began by reading a telegram from I lie Premier, as follows:- "Mrs Massey regrets that she is unable 1 In attend the show to-day, _ owing to an engagement in Wellington. She joins with me in wishing you and the other members of the soc- ' ieiv all success in their efforts.'" Mr Brouse wont on to refer to the notable people who had opened the show in past years (including Sir Joseph Ward, Bichard John Seddon, and Mr McKen/.ie,_ the Victorian Minister for Agriculture). Mr Brouse said they all regretted the inability of Mr and Mrs Massey to be wilh them on this occasion, but the onerous duties rrf Barliament had prevented the Bremier from leaving Wellington, and a prior engagement had necessitated Mrs Massey from coming up. Mr Brouse congratulated the society on the quality of its show; as lie had said on a previous occasion, a show was simply the index of the oi people who live in this district. When one looked at the beautiful flowers and foliage they realised in what fine homes our people lived : and when they saw the excellent cookery displayed in the show thej' knew why we had amongst 1 us so many contented In ' making clear this fact, as it did ' do, the Levin Horticultural Society showed itself well deserving ' nf the support of the general pub- • lie. The society was one that worked whole-heartedly .to help } llie district, and there was no ' bodv of men with which he was acquainted that worked year in 1 and year out in such j ■ consistent harmony as the j ' Levin Horticultural Society " displayed. The love ol I flowers was a most desirable quality, though here and there an odd - person might sneer at it as be- .' neath the dignity of a man. Yet >•' in Japan men would travel forty ■ miles to see a blossoming of the ) cherrv trees; and where more t than 'amongst the Japanese were , the qualities of patriotism and brai> very to be found? Such a spirit i as he had referred to was elevati ing in the highest degree^ The following is the prize list: ; CUT BLOOMS. Arum lily. Miss Lyes J, Mrs S. Barsons 2. Three entries, f Antirrhinium.
