The closing of the hotel bars in Auckland city and suburbs is apparently being turned to good account by the more ingenious of the local tradesmen. It has become quite a common sight in the suburbs to sec the window of a purveyor of "soft" drinks openly displaying a placard bearing in bold letters the word "Beer," and it is only on inspection that the small but extenuating word "hop" becomes noticeable. - • A- Mana watu farmer states that the season has been rather too good for growth. He has hay crops past the stage for cutting, and it is impossible to touch them owing to the unsettled weather.
