The Li lost issue of The Otaki Mail gives the following- news items:— The friends' of Miss Pauline Brown, who was recently stricken with an attack of scarlet fever, will be pleased to learn that she is making good progress, and hopes are entertained of Mrs and Miss Brown returning home for Christmas. An event of considerable importance will take place at .the Waikanao racecourse on Saturday, December Bth, when the famous American athletes, who are to lour New Zealand, are to make their first public i-rppearanee in the dominion, under the auspices of the Waikanae Amateur Athletic Club. At the last meeting of the Manaka.ii Lawn Tennis Club, it was decided to erect a tennis pavilion, and thus cater for the convenience of players and friends. It was also resolved to start "ladder" matches shortly after Christmas. The courts are in goocf order, players are practising assiduously, and showing good form. It is hoped to arrange matches with outside clubs, which should be the means of infusing even more interest in the club. The following judges have been appointed for the Oiaki Horticultural Show, on December !srd : Domestic class. Mr "Whitehead, of Palmerston North; schoolwork, Miss "Williamson, of Wellington Technical School: needlework, Mrs Hamerton, of Wellington; butter, Mr T. W. McDonald, of the Otaki Dairy Company. The oilier judges have not yet been definitely arranged for. Brown Trout, the local racehorse owned by Messrs Monekton and Addiugton, who broke his leg recently, was shot on Thursday. The accident was caused while the animal was in the act of rising. rt is understood the horse was insured in Lloyd's for iSiOO.
