The following news items are clipped from the Otaki Mail:Mr J. P. Lomas, for the past six years a settler at Piongokaka, Eketahuna district, and a wellknown member of local bodies, has, says a Wairarapa exchange, sold out. "Mr Lomax was one of the' prime movers in the" establishment of the Wellington Farmery' Freezing Co. Mr Lomas has now taken up his residence in Otaki.
Constable Satherley has received word to send fourteen specials to Wellington to relieve some who are anxious to retiu'n home. Several have volunteered, among the number being Mr Arthur Drake, who also offered some eight horses. Other volunteers should give their names to Constable Satherley as soon as possible.
Ripe cherries and currants are now plentiful 'at Paraparaumu, while strawberries arc selling* freely in Otaki. " A euchre parly and dance was held at the Manukau Public Hall on Wednesday night last, hi aid of the local school prize fund. There was a very good attendance ■ and everything* passed .off successfully and pleasingly. The. committee, assisted by local ladies, worked hard to make the function a success. As a result' of the gathering (he prize fund will be considerably augmented.. Length of flower stems is a desideratum in sweet pea growing for exhibition purposes. Tins season sweet peas appear to be doing excellently. _ We have been shown some- specimens, locally crown, with exceedingly long stems. Quite a number were 19 io 20 inches in length, stem of ''Mrs Bro-ulniore," a specially robust grower, wo • in l.\«s than 25?. inches in length of flower stalk.
