1, Commercial reports on Shannon stock sale, .Dalgety's cabled report on London markets, and reports ■ from "Wellington wool, skins, and hides sales appear on paire 4 today. 'During the month of October two very quiet weddings were taken by the Rev. 11. i . Sicaley in St. Mary's Church, Levin. On each occasion only two witnesses required by the law were present. Close, very close to Levin, a widow has been left with nine children, liioeldesl not much more than twelve years of age. She has to maintain herself and her family on lo acres of land, and is at present milking live cows. 11l and weary, the other morning she slept until alter (i o'clock, and was awakened by the .12-year-old girl, who brought her a cup of tea. The mother asked her to drive the cows in as it was time they were milked. "Don't worry, mother, I finished.milking about a quarter of an hour ago," was the reply of the plucky child. This calls to mind the Tasmanian 15-year-old girl who, under the neighbours' kindly guidance, is bringing up her younger brothers and sisters. And yet one occasionally hears the old gag that the "colonials'" have not the grit of their forebears.
