The funeral of little Arthur, a Government child lormerly living with Mr and Mrs Bennett, Weraroa road, took place on Monday afternoon. The Rev. H. T. Stealey conducted the service at the grave. An honest young man—driver for a local grocer—found the sum of £3 in notes lost m Levin last week, and advertised for in The Chronicle. The advertiser offered ten shillings reward, but the young man refused to take it, and handed over the £'6 intact. It may be of interest to draw the attention of shopkeepers, and the individuals who—m the excitement caused by the recent nonobservance of Labour Day by certain shopkeepers in the town— nearly fell into the inkpot in their haste to write "to the editor" that the new Shows and Offices Act provides for compulsory closing on the following days: Christmas Day, Boxing D{iy, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day and the birthday of the reigning Sovereign.
A shocking train accident occurred near Terrace End, Palmerston, yesterday afternoon, by which a boy, Herbert Cross, four years of age, was killed, and his companion, Gordon Allen, aged four-and-a-half years, sustained a broken leg and a fractured skull, and little hope is held for his recovery. The unfortunate lads were , playing on the line, and in getting out of the way of the Woodville train, failed to see the Auckland express, which struck them violently, throwing them clear of the line, and inflicting the above injuries.
