DISTRICT NEWS
' EVENTS IN SHANNON. (Chronicled by our Resident Representative). LAWLESSNESS AT SHANNON The strike is making ilsolf felt in Shannon, as in other places. On Saturday night a body of about a hundred flaxmill hands assembled in front of the Post Office. They wore addressed by Messrs Higgs and Hillier, and a resolution was passed expressing sympathy ivith the waterside workers. A train containing some free labourers went through Shannon about 6 p.m. There was a good deal of hooting, and one of the windows was broken by a man who tried to hit one of the passengers with his fist. About midnight another train went through, and this met with more serious obstruction. The train pulled up at Wood's to let some passengers entrain, and then rattled on as fast as possible; it was assailed by showers of stones thrown by strike sympathisers, who lined the track on either side. The railway line is strewn with broken glass all along the station premises. One of the station trollies was put on the line, and was smashed by the train, while stones were placed at tho points with the evident intention of wrecking the train. It ie also said that somo sleepers were placed on the line. It is stated in Shannon that a mill at Tokomaru' was burnt down between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
From another source, The Chronicle learns thnt tho train ran along safely and uneventfully from Palmorston, until approaching Tokomaru, when a glare was seen ahead, and it was believed a rumour of attempted bridgpbnrning WHB likely to prove true. The train pulled up, but the tire was found to be at Mr J . Liggine's mill. The scrutching shed of this building was completely destroyed. The train then proceeded on its journey. Mr Liggins does not attach suspicion to any of his hands. He will be a considerable loser.
