IN CHRISTCHURCH
Christchurch, Thin Duy. An advertisement appeared in this morning's papers inviting ;: } ,-.persons willing to accept work on wharves to apply to tho offices the Employers' Association. A .applied, but there was no conresponse. It was stated that soma country hands, mostly farmers' sons, are prepared to come into town if required, but nothing definite has been done. Lyttelton contains very Tittle shipping at the present time, and most of the strikers would be unemployed in any case. The Carters' Union meets to-night to consider the position. Members employed by the large carrying firms are uneasy, having received a week's notice in view of the possibility of the goods traffic ceasing. The pickets are busy at Lyttelton, where any movement is closely watched. The arrived I'rom Wellington, six firemen short. The company is attempting to secure firemen from another boat. It is stated that any attempt to use its permanent hands in the engine room will bring other men out, and prevent the boat going north to-night, but the company expects to overcome the difficulty. Tlie strikers consented to allow the harbour dredge to take coal from The hulk, otherwise dredging would have . ' c-eased.
