EVENTS IN SHANNON. (Chronicled by 'our Resident Representative). 1.0. G.T. The Hope of Shannon Lodge, 1.0. G.T., met as usual on Mon day evening, and had what is called* an "open night,' which took ilie form of a social to welcome Jim. I). (.!. Cameron, the Organiser of the Order, who paid another visit to Shannon. Miss Mabel Slater was elected a member of the order. It was decided o)i the motion of Bio. Peterson that the officers elected at the reorganisation of the Lodge should retain their offices during the ensuing quarter. The Lodge then went into recess to welcome Bro. Cameron, when there was an entertainment which was attended by many friends, in addition to the members of the Order. The Rev. T. Crawford presided, and h:til the guest of.iho evening on his right. .Master I'oggie Merwood contributed a violin solo. The chairman gave a short address of welcome to Bro. Cameron He expressed the ladies desire to encourage Bro. Cameron iu his work, that our organiser might feel that his oll'orls were not in vain. Bro. Peiiersou also welcomed the visitor.
Bro. Cameron said he was delighted to meet the Shannon Good Templars once more. He congratulated the lodge on. its recent progress, and referred to his experiences in other localities. lie 'disparaged the gambling of Shaunon in billiard saloons. He iirgI'd the members of the lodge to maintain good order and decorum, and not allow the harmony to bo spoilt by indocorus behaviour. The liquor party were making con veils vxci-y ilwy, and hood Templars should bestir themselves. lie thanked them for their welcome, and wished the lodge every success. Miss Annie Butt sang "Charily'' very sweetly. Miss AYiekJilYc recited "The Templars Vow," the Rev. J. A. Mclvenzie sang fc "Plymouth Hoe" with good expression. Various games were, indulged in. Mr Exall gave a temperance reading and .Mr IVfters.ol) gave a short recitation. Supper followed, and shortly after an enjoyable evening was brought to a close. MJliANl'l GIN CLI/B. The Mirauui Gun Club had a gold day on .Monday last (Labour l)ay). They celebrated the occasion by an open day bird-shooling match in Mr Woods's paddocks. The weather was fine, but a nasty choppy wind interfered somewhat with the shooting. The committee had made the best possible arrangements for the accommodatiou of the public, and the convenience of the competitors. Refreshments were provided in a marquee provided lor the purpose. Many of the champion shooters of "Ntvw Zealand were amongst the contestants, and this served to heighten the interest of the spectators. Amongst those who worked to make i)w affair the I success it was may be mentioned the indefatigable secretary, Mr E.' -I. King, and Airs Warrington and Mrs J , ]. Warringlon, who •f / looked after the refreshments, and the committee who had boon busy making preparations for some days before hand. Flags adorned the booths, and in order to indicate its importance, \}\v secretary's tent was flying the Royal Standard. The attendance of spectators was large, and the committee of the Miranui Gun Club have every reason to be congratulated on the success of the gathering. Harrington tried in the second nomination and divided the third prize. The competitors concluded the clay's sport with a sweepstake got up amongst themselves. On Saturday last Mr "Wood, J. P., held a police court in Shannon, when Thos. Bennett was fined £B or 14 days' imprisonment, and George Coyle was sentenced to .14 days' imprisonment without the option of a fine for cominitt-
ing a breach of the peace. The big mill will start running again on Thursday. • The recent floods have damaged the tramline and hindered operations considerably. The .Shannon Cricket Club, in hopes of increasing their funds, lield a "hard up" social " in the Druids , Hall on Monday night. The result was satisfactory, as the hall was crowded. Mr.Kuyvett,' of I'eilding, was an eilicient pianist, and was assisted by Mr H. Hook and Mr Graham, violinists. Sougs were given by Messrs lvnyvett and McEwcn. Mr-Murdoch, who was on a visit to Shannon from the Empire City, gave a short address on beiialf of the Cricket Club, and thanked the ladies for iheir kind assistance in making the event such a success. Dancing was kept up till an early hour in the morning. On the bowling green last Monday a game was .played between I , ]. I). Siephensnn, Bilderbeek and Iviiowles (skip), who seined nine against Bromley, Roach and (J uniniing (skip), who scored • !(). On ihe tennis court, seveiiil ladder niahdies were played. Miss Dunekley and Mr Liud providing tea and cakes.
