The Premier then advised Mr Bradney (in charge of the bill) to report progress after the short title had been passed, and the Premier would give a further oppoitunity'of considering the bill. In the meantime he would get expressions of opinion from Auckland that would strengthen the position of the measure in the House. Sir Joseph Ward said the Premier might interpret expressions of opinion from Auckland as he pleased, but he (Sir Joseph Ward) hail also received expression of opinion from Auckland (against the bill), and he therefore knew there wna a strong feeling against it in Auckland. At the same time, he had opposed it on principle. A vote of the people had been taken: that amounted to a contract, and it ought to be respected as a contract and not interfered with by legislation. The short tile was then passed and the House adjourned at 4.40.
