Charles 'Roberts of Tulsa, Oklahoma, who claims to be the father ol 51. children, has been arrested and charged with committing contempt of Court. The charge arises out of his action in a guardianship case. Uobcrts says he. can establish his claim oi having the largest family in the United States, and, possibly in the world. He was first married in 1807, and had 19 children by that wife. He was married several times afterwards. He has now'-Jo children living. MANUEL'S SICK BRIDE. Paris, October 12. Ex-Queen Amelie, mother of exKing Manuel, of Portugal, has made a statement for publication concerning the ilhiess of her dau-ghter-ill-law. "Manuel and myself are extremely indignant at the stories which have been circulated as to the cause of (lie illness of Queen Augustine Victoria," she said. "The Queen contracted her illness through taking a walk on a veia cold night. At one time we feared she was contracting typhoid, but happily that danger is oyer.'' HYPNOTIC SUGGESTION. London, October 12. A cure of blindness by means of hypnotism is claimed to have been made by Alexander Erskine, who lectured before the International Club of Physical Research yesterday. A patient, Gertrude Yates, was shown to the audience. She had been born blind, but Mr Erskine found that the machinery of the eye was intact and that the girl merely lacked the will and the power to transmit to the brain the impression of objects rellectcd on the retina. He corrected this by means of hypnotic suggestion. UMBRELLA MAKERS' STRIKE. New York, October 12. Taking advantage of the rainy weather the Umbrella Handle ami Stick Makers' Union has declared a strike. It is expected that (iOO silversmiths and (iOOO umbrella makers will strike in sympathy. 'The men claim the recognition of their union, shorter hours, increased wages, sanitan workshops, and the abolition of piecework. STARVED WITH AMiOO 'Vancouver October 12. Daniel Sorensen, aged 72, a former shipmaster, was found dead from starvation in a shack at Youngstown, near Seattle, yesterday.
