CORRESPONDENCE

(Our correspondents' opinions are their own; the responsibility of editorial ones makes sufficient. ballast for the editor'? shoulders.] THE BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY. (To the Editor.) Sir, —The public of Levin no doubt will be glad to know, from a report in your columns to-day, that the Levin Beautifying Society is still in existence, but apparently the public of Levin are not much interested whether the society is active or defunct judg--4 ing by the poor attendance at the society's first annual meeting held last night. Few, it any, could plead-adverse weather conditions; and it is to be regretted that a greater interest was not shown. The society exists for the pleasure and benefit of every member of the community, and if the public generally cannot lend financial support to the extent of the annual subscription of 2s Gd for adults and Gd for children, surely they will not withhold even that support, which often counts foi W more, viz., interest in the work in hand and encouragement to the committee and officers who manage the affairs of the society. "Where, Mr Editor, were the members of our Horticultural Society, of our tennis, cricket and hockey clubs—and even our swimming club? Is it not in the interest of all our sports bodies that the precincts of their playing grounds should be made attractive, and by showing a more lively interest in the Beautifying Society this end may be accomplished. Citizens are referred to the small park at the intersections of Cambridge and Bath Streets for soriie indication of the work done during the past year, and I claim that this alone is sufficient to warrant a more liberal public patronage of the efforts of their Beaut ifving Society.—l am, etc., A BIRD OF PASSAGE. Levin, October 2-3, 1913.
