A "Gold Brick"
4 A military defaulter, who was summoned at the Auckland Police Court, produced a sealed letter from a medical man, remarking' that he was not well enough to do his drill. "I suppose you do not know what is in this," remarked Mr E.G. Cutteu, R. M., as he read the letter. ''No, vonr Worship," was the reply. "Well, the doctor says that your sickness is due to cigarette smoking," said the Magistrate, ''and for that reason exemption cannot be granted." "What am I to do, then?" inquired the youth. "Knock oft cigarettes," was the magisterial advice. "It is better to do drill than smoke cigarettes. The one does you good and the other kills you." In answer to further inquiry, the youth said he was 20 years of age. He Avas exhorted to take hold of himself and not let the cigarette habit take charge of him at his age. "Smoke a pipe if you want to smoke," was the parting injunction from the bench.
