[I'JiLl CRESS ASSOC lAT J OX.] HINTLY MINES. Auckland, October 15). A. mass meeting of miners at 11 untly on Saturday afternoon almost unanimously decided not to proceed to work on Monday morningl. During the winter months some twelve bundled men are employed at these coal mines, hut, with the approach of summer and Ihe consequent decrease in coal consumption, "the company always dispense with the services of at least one or two hundred men. About a fortnight ago sixteen miners received notice of the termination of their engagements as from October 17, and the Miners' Union Executive asked the company for a conference. The directors" replied that a conference would be of no use, as these men could not be reinstated, and added that it was intended to put off more miners at an early date. As three of the men affected were members of the union executive, victimisation was alleged against the company. The miners' meeting decided that the miners would remain idle until the men were reinstated. It is* stated that a system of picketing has already been arranged, and that a number of men not in sympathy with the strikers have determined to proceed to work as usual on Monday. Interesting developments may be expected.
