LOCAL & GENERAL
A short story written by Mrs i ,, . May, formerly of Shannon, gained first prize in the Gisborne literary competitions* last month. We have been asked to reprint the story in The Chronicle. I'art of the story appears to-day, on page 'I, and the balance will be published to-morrow.
Says the i'oxton Herald:—"We have been shown, per Mr Heimossy, the plans and report on the proposed water scheme for Shannon township, prepared by Mr Suggate. The cost of the scheme is approximately ,£'12,215. This does not include provision for drainage. , ' .
Mr Abraham Thompson, aged 72 years, for 50 yours n blacksmith at Matlock (England), died early in September. Business has been carried on at the forge for '500 years.
