Beach Road Deviation.

QUESTION OE l&ISING

MONEY

A public meeting to discuss ways and means of putting Beach road in better order, and deviating It where necessary, was held in Levin last night. There was an at- . tendance of sixteen citizens, ineluding two ladies. The gathering comprised Mesdames Gardener and Broome, Messrs •Gardener (chair), Eosella, I). Smart, Guy • Marriott, W. B. Macintosh, Hugh Hall, E. 0. Smith, if. B. E ranee,

W. l>yke, E. S. Lancaster. ]). W. Matheson, E. E. Parker. E. Henderson, E. W. «T. Smith, and T. Broome. In opening the proceedings, the Mayor (Mr B. R. Gardener) lamented the paucity of the attendance, and he said it was disheartening to find the muster was so small. Hokio Beach was an excellent asset to the town, and especially to the tradespeople. If it could be further popularised the tradespeople would be further benefited; yet with the few exceptions they could see for themselves the tradespeople showed small disposition to help the movement. This want of public spirit had been apparent for a long while; it was not only in regard to this matter Going on to speak of the main subject, Mr Gardener remarked that the Horowhenua County Council was willing to find +'100 for the

work, the estimated cost beiiu

£l;JO'to £140. The question tthe meeting to consider was how best to set about raising this sum of £30 or £40. The Im»i-ou»-1i council's estimates for the ye.r were complete: and there were i;> kirge sums available from any ? borough funds. He thought their ! should" be no difficulty in raising j the money; with public subscriptions a good deal could be done, and lie believed I lie money could j be raised in a few weeks' lime, ami \ the work got in hand. I'ossib.U I a little money could be got fron. | the Levin Borough Council, but \ it necessarily would be small, as j only £50 had been set down for unauthorised expenditure, and £80 of that sum already had been expended, although but six months of the financial year ha-i expired. I Discussion took place ;is in th< j proposed route of the deviation. J and eventually ii was resolved llm! 1 Messrs Eosella. Clark. Macintosh | and Lancaster be a committee to | wait upon the County Engineer. " and ascertain from him the exac' if route of the deviation. | Mrs Gardener pro]>osed that . | public concert be got up: she was '{ sure that a good sum of money \ could be raised in that way. I Mr Fosella supported tiie pro- | posal: but Mr P. 0. Smith said j he would prefer to see the money I voted out of the rates: then every- | bodv would bear his proper slia re. | The .Mayor explained that tin | council could not strike a rate foi I flu's purpose, and to take the tuop- j

ey out of the general rates would bo illeeral. Mr Lancaster nroposod and M> Broomo seconded n motion tha : subscription lists lie opened a. well. This, too, was agreed to on the voices. . Mr Macintosh said lie wis n-« altogether in favour of the concert proposal, but he would do hi.best to help it on: he thought ii did not matter niueli how tue\ went about it if they succeeded ; n their object. But personally be was in favour of the subscription list. He was authorised to sa\ that Mr W. M. Clark would contribute five guineas to the fund. and he (Mr Macintosh) would Ik pleased to give two guineas (applause). Mr T. Broome intiniat- , ed that he would give two guineas, i and Mr Pykc donated a guinea also—thus bringing the tot;. I amount promised up ten guineas. ;

A committee coiisistni»- of Mesdumes Gardener, Clark, am; Bloome and Messrs J']. \\ r . •'/'. Smith and D. "W. Mathoson was set up to make arningenients fni tke concert. The committee lias power to add to its unrulier. Subscription lists are to ho propared, nnd kept at the Borough Council Offices and the office of the Horowhenua Daily Chronicle. respectively.
