Levin and District Beautifying Society.
PUBLIC GARDENS.
A visit of members of the committee of this Society was made to the public gardens in Cambridge street on Saturday afternoon. There were present Messrs Blenkhorn, Posella and S. Hail; also Mrs Lancaster and Mrs It. Prouse. The grounu had been well trenched and manured at the Society's expense. inspection was made of the hedge plants and the olearia (ake ake) forming 1 the road side fences, was found to be corning on very well, and alao the olaeagnus on the easterly side of (he garden. The japonica on the northern boundary and the tree lucerne planted here and there has not taken quite so well.
A bed comprising of about a dozen each of rhododendron, azaleas and ericas supplied from Mr Li. Newport's nursery has been planted, and sheltered by a temporary breakwind of scrub, should thrive well, as the ground is in good condition. A rose bed formed part of the plan of (lie garden, and the same has been thickly plan I eel with over fifty named varieties, at halfprice, by Messrs Weightman aud .Son, of Peilding. It was not on the programme to plant all the available space this year, but a start has /been made. Several trees and shrubs have been donated and planted, including clumps of bamboo, from Mr h'osella ; some have also been purchased. The trees planted include a dozen or so of the scarlet flowering gum (eucalyptus ficifolia.) The Committee, on Saturday afternoon, planted out two or three beds of dark scarlet geraniums, of one shade, which had been specially rooted for the Society's use by Mis Li. I'rouse. ft was decided to procure a number of bedding annuals tor the summer's display, and to solicit gifts of herbaceous ami other (lowering plants for the hack borders. The young grass is making its appearance, and in a few more days the various grass plots will wear a greeu appearance. The paths, which have been laid out and formed by the Boroi/gh Council workmen, are now in good order, and in a short time will be tarred and sanded, preventing the growth of weeds and giving a finished appearance to the gardens. The pond, which was excavated at the cost of the council and claypuddled in the first instauce was found to leak considerably, owing to the nature of the day. It was decided to use a small covering of concrete, the society finding the cement: and the .work is mow satisfactory. Water lillies •vill be planted this mouth. A few lawn seats arc required to be placed in various parts of the gardens, and an opening is afforded to generous and public-spirited persons who are not averse to helping forward a desirable movement. Enclosure towards Railway Station. This space has been thickly nUinted with, tree, (towering and other shrubs, the majority of •vhich have made a good start although there are a few failures.
