The Chronicle PUBLISHED DAILY. LEVIN. SATURDAY, SEPT. 27, 1913. SAND DRIFTS.
ILkkk in Levin the insidious nature of the sand drifts is well recognised, and persistent attempts are made to μ-et the Government to attaek this national menace in a national way. So far the Government is unwilling , to work in this vicinity, but it is meditating the carrying out of remedial works in a, small area of Crown Land in au adjoining electorate. But the tact becomes clearer every day that the area of danger is so widespread a one that all the measures in present contemplation of the Government- become quite insufficient for the needs of the case. The. whole stretch of coastal lands from Northern Taranaki to Plhnmerton seems to be threatened in frequently-recurring patches. The latest proof of this is given by the Waitara Hail, which records that for some reason or other there seems to be a larger quantity of drifting sand along the sea-coast of this part of the North Island than has been known before. In all probability the quantity has been gradually increasing for years, since, in fact, the bush lias been cleared from the banks of the streams on this coast. Previously the san.. was held up by the scrub, but now it is carried freely into the streams, and from JAjxton upwards one hears the cry of shallowing livers and bars. The trouble is also being experienced in a marked manner at the New Plymouth, breakwater.
SKULL'S AND JAWS
Tiik skulls of till men who who died in (Ik , Napoleonic wars (says Professor Starr Jordan) would make a pyramid of upwards of hventy-h've times as high as any building or column in Europo. To which wo would add that the jaws of all (he men who have yawned while reading the professor's treatises would make one great open mouth that would reach from here (o over yonder.
