The lease for five years of an area of 33 acres in the Levin Domaiu (including the old racecourse) was submitted to auction by Messrs Abraham and "Williams, Ltd., this (Friday) afternoon. There was spirited bidding between Messrs F. 0. Smith, A. Sobye and N. Kirkcaldie. all three seeming determined to secure the land. Eventually it was knocked down to Mr Kirkcaldie, at 3(is Gd per acre per annum. Some district meji were lunohiug at a Palmerston refreshment room recently, and a certain district paper was being dismissed. "What kind of a man. is the editor?" said one. "Ob ! a godly man, but an ungodly poet!" replied the other. "Now, Mr District Editors, who among you is guilty of writing diabolical, drivelling doggerel ?"-- -Foxton Herald.
