Labor Conditions.

IN AN ADJOINING DISTINCT

There was no trade done in Otaki last month -so far as The Labour Journal lias heard. Regarding Palmerston North, the Journal reports as under: — PALMERSTON NORTH. Trade has been fairly satisfactory during the past month. In retail shops seasonal sales are now on. Outside labour has also been satisfactory, the building trades being still the busiest. Several fair-sized buildings are in course of crcction, and plans for another bank building are being prepared. Building trades: Bricklaying very busy; several brick buildings in the course of erection. Carpentry and joinery very busy. Painting and plastering busy; all hands fully employed. Plumbing and gasfitting good. Stonemasonry fairlv busv.

Woodworking trades: Boxmaking fair. Cabinetmaking and upholstering busy; good cabinetmakers wanted. Coopering fair. Sawmilling busy. Engineering trades very good : all hands fully employed. - Leather trades : Bootmaking (repair shops)— Trade fair and work plentiful.' Saddlery and harnessmaking fair. Clothing trades: Dressmaking and millinery very good, some shops working overtime occasionally. Tailoring (order) still fairly busy. I?etail trades: Clothing good.' Boots fair. Drapery—Fair trade being done for this season of the year. Groceries good. Printing trades busy: all hands have been employed full time, while overtime worked occasionally. Coachbuilding trades: Blacksmithing busy. Coach and carriage building—Plenty of work offering; no hands wanted.

Cycle and motor trades fair; chiefly repair work on hand. Agricultural operations: Farming, dairying, etc., fair for this 'h'me of year.

1 Miscellaneous: • Flaxmilling— Most mills are working, and others will start shortly. Unskilled labour: Several bushMlers have been sent to the Oliakune district lately. There have b<HMi rather more callers for emphuraent than usual during the pas'l week or so, but as they did not visit the office a second time it is presumed they managed to find employment without the Department's assistance.
