Water and Drainage.

SUGGESTION TO COMBINE WITH SHANNON. A. deputation consisting of Messrs Hennessy, Billiard, Hopper, Hcaley and Jno. Ross waited on the Foxton Borough Council for the purpose of suggesting that in connection with the proposed water scheme from the Shannon, hills Fox ton should combine with Shannon in paying the cost of the intake area. Mr Hennessy said the di putation was got up at very short notice, but their object was to put the above suggestion before the council for consideration'. He said there was a feeling among a section of the ratepayers that Foxton should join with Shannon in the matter. To agree to the suggestion would not commit the council to anything, and by so doing an opportunity would be afforded the ratepayers of saying what (hey wanted. He said the deputation was of opinion that if the council went on with the Shannon scheme on their own it would be the means of killing it,as it was too large an undertaking for the borough. On the other hand, they were of opinion that if loxton joined with Shannon there was a good chance indeed of a poll being catried. On the occasion of the previous poll he had opposed water and drainage simply because it was a pumping scheme that was put before them. Mr Bullard said he did not see any difficulty in the way of joining with Shannon, and by so doing it would mean a considerable saving to Foxton. The Mayor said the suggestion dealt with by the deputation would be brought up again when Mr Suggate furnished his report. Personally he was quite in accord with the suggestion. i>y the deputation waiting on the council, it gave them some idea of the opinions of at least a section of the rate- j payers, and it was as well io have lluse opinions as sometimes perhaps the opinions of the councillors w.cre not the opinions of the majority of the ratepayers.- -Herald.
