LOCAL & GENERAL
An announcement already lias been made in The Chronicle that the Gtovernment has decided to curry out sand drift experiments further up the coast than Levin on Crown lands. This decision was adversely commented upon by the President of Levin Chamber of Commerce (Mr E. S. Lancaster), who said lie did not feel at all satisfied with the announcement; he thought the Government had not treated this district ri«'ht. Tlie Premier had expressed sympathy with Levin nnd by inference had let them understand that the sand drift trouble here would be taken in hand as soon as possible, but now the Government took the stand that Crown lands must ho experimented upon first. I\fr Lancaster contended that, virtually, the worst land in tho vicinity of Levin (some 700 acres) was Crown land: : ,t least if was land that belonged to nobody. If the Government would vest an area of some one hundred iH'Vos in tiie local bodies j< would be possible to have soincihing done locally to get this iu'ea fenced in, and planted. Eventually Mr Dompsey moved, and Mr Smart seconded a motion flint the receipt of the Prime Minister's letter he acknowledged, and that the opinion be expressed that Levin was not bein.ir I rented properly, secin.o- flu,!
