EVENTS L\ SHANNON. (Chronicled by our .Ucsident Representative.) A combined meet nig 1 (if bowlers 11 <1 tennis players was held in the Mechanics' Institute on Friday last, Mr T. ]jiiul presiding. It was decided to hold I lie annual progressive euchre tournament and dance on Friday, August 29th, in the Druids' Jlall. Messrs Column and Lind were appointed joint ■ieeretnries, and under their management the alTair should be a great suceess. Two li unci red entries lmvu been received by Mrs Gibson for the Shannon Musical and Elocutionary Competitions, tu be held in the Druids' llall on August l-'ith and 1-lth. Miss Olga Nicholson, of Levin, will compote in the soprano test. Two choirs will compete the first night, and three choirs on the second night. Mrs Hobcrison will present the medals won in the children's classes on the night of the concert following the competitions. There are now three resi- C dents of Shannon under treatment in the Otaki Hospital: Mr Forbes, who sustained a compound fracture of the leg at football, Mr liuehinan, who broke his leg while running to :i fire, and is making slow progress towards recovery, and Mr Denton, who was formerly in Mr Uoultbee's chemist's shop, whose health had been failing him for some time past. 11 is stated that another hall will be erected in opposition to I lie Druids' llall, by Mr 1\ ('ill. in Ballance street. Advance Shannon ! Dr. Adams is still busy vaccinating all and sundry. Maoris and pakelms alike. The smallpox scare is not such a bud thing for the doctors. It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good.
