This was the note that was handed to one of the teachers at a small school out-oack:-; '"Dear Mum, —-i'lease ixciise Johnny to-day, lie will not be at school. lie is acting as timekeeper for his father. John ain't no man, so we had to send his thickly. They left early this morning, and my husband said they ought to be back late tonight, though it Avould be hard going.
