Questions by Members. HIGH SCHOOLS. Mr G. M. Thomson to a,sk the Minister of Education, Whether, in view of the fact that
the majority of district high schools are specializing in the matter of agriculture, a subject requiring an expert scientific training, and that the salaries payable to the secondary assistants are not sufficient to secure teachers having this expert training, he will consider the necessity of altering the present scale of remuneration, especially in view of the fact that most of those teachers who take up secondary work in the district high schools are apt to be sidetracked and to lose the chances of rising in their profession? The Hon. Mr Allen replied, lu cases where district high schools arc taking the rural course and specialising in agriculture and home science an , additional capitation payment ■of .£.'•» LOs per annum is under the regulations payable on account of each pupil, and if the secondary assistants take the special agricultural work, the part or the whole oi this extra capitation may do paid to them in addition to their ordinary salary. If, however, the specal work is taken by aiTHTnerant instructor not on the staff of the school, the extra capitation is required to pay his salary for the work performed in the group of schools in which he gives such instruction. At the same, time I recognise that it is desirable on general grounds to give some increases to the salaries of secondary assistants in the district high schools, and hope to be able to eonsfter the matter favourably in the near future.
PHYSICAL C'liyiTllE. Mr isitt to ask the Minister of Education, Whether it is ture that Mr Royd Garlick is preparing a book on physical culture to be purchased by either teachers or pupils under his instruction? (Note. —The London School Board is using for its scores of thousands of children a splendid manual that could be sold here for ninepence. Such a book could not be j) rod need here for four times the money). The Hon. Mr Allen replied, It is not true. The Education Department has ordered for distribution to teachers 15000 copies of the book referred to, which is issued not by the London School Board (or Education Committee of the London County Council, as it is now called), but by the English Board of Education-i.e., Education Depart merit.
