Land Balloting

The existing system of balloting for land was condemned by speakers at yesterday's silting of the Agricultural Societies' Conference. The conference resolved: "That in all Government ballots for land for settlement hinds, experienced farm labourers and the sons of small farmers should be given preference over all other applicants." Mr John Studholme, the Ashburl on representative at the conference, said thai Ihe existing ballot system was idiotic, and that it Artis stupid thai a daughter of an inn-keeper or i clerk from a city office should by chance oust a young man who had spent his early years learning farming. The present system was, according to Mr Hugh Morrison, of Maslerlon, not encouraging lo young farm-workers, who had saved their money. He had working for him men who had been trying for some time lo obtain land, but had not been able to do so. Dominion.
