An effort is being made in New South !\Vales to receive the Bat hurst-Sydney road race, and already substantia J donations have been promised towards this end. This event, a few years back, ranked second in importance to the jjunlop road race from Goulburn to Sydney, and produced some fine contests. It has been definitely decided by . the League o± A.S.W. to this year hold a road race from Tamworth to Newcastle, a distance of 74 miles. The Dunlop Rubber Company have donated £2b as first prize for the event. The race will be the .largest yet held on the road in Australasia and it will probably be held in September or October . The forthcoming Grand Prix motor car race has already been responsible for two fatalities, Messrs Bigio (chief engineer of the Itala Co.) and Arbizzon, both being killed while testing their racers on the French roads. A certain amount of mystery surrrounds the unfortunate accident, for having occurred soon after -"> a.m., there were no witnesses, andj of the two victims, one died almost immediately and the otTfer could give but meagre information. Signer Bigio, who had been connected with the Itala Company about six years, had intended driving one of the firm's care in the Grand Prix, his companions being Nazzaro and Moriando. In company with Moriando and a number of mechanics, Bigio left Turin and proceeded to where the big race is to be decided. As the course is closed to racing cars, tile men had to be satisfied with, goiug round on tcmring models. In order to test out their racer, they proeoedI ed to ■ Brookland6 (Eng.), remained there a few daj-s, and then wont back to l'rance by way of Dieppe. Wishing to fake advantage of the remark-

ably fast roads which formed last year's Grand i'nx course, the Italiaii engineers made arrangements to spend a few days at Dieppe.. To avoid all possibility of trouble with traffic, Siguor Bigio left Dieppe at <S a.m. on tlie morning of the smash-up intending to make one round of the course and then return to town. Soon after passing through the village of Mes-lnlc-Rea.ume, the car overturned, both men being pinned underneath. Although very seriously injured the mechanic , was able to crawl out on his elbows, and laid by the roadside' for more than an hour, when he was observed by a peasant going to work in the fields. The mechanician subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
