A case of smallpox is reported from Huntly, the patient being a Methodist clergyman who should have performed a marriage ceremony to-day, but was unable to do so. The services of another cleric were requisitioned. The patient is isolated, together with members of the family with whom he resided. .The public school (attended by a large number of native scholars) has been closed. TAIUNAIU S WILL-O'-THE-WISP. New Plymouth, This Day. Great activity prevails in petroleum. The PhoenTx Company, a Christchurch concern, commenced drilling at Moturoa yesterday. The Consolidated Oilfields of Taranaki, also a Christchurch concern, commences to-day -at Iluiroa, inland of Stratford. Both these companies are -under the management of Mr Fedeorowi'ez. The. Bonithon Company, of Wellington, commences to-morrow, between New Plymouth and Moturoa. Several other companies will he starting soon. The refinery is working satisfactorily, and will be formally >pened Monday next.
