Hammond declared that the alleged smallpox was only a scare disease, and lie described it as "alee ake." lie said he had known ol : an outbreak six months previously, which ran its course and did not attack Europeans to any extent. The disease appeared among tin; Maoris at diil'erenl periods, and there was 110 need for alarm. Li reply to this, j)r Te Kang'ihiroa, M.P., who is at present working- among: the natives in the infected areas of the north, said that lie found several eases and the disease was not the ordinary skin a fleet ion, 'ake ake ; it was something jnore . severe. The disease was like smallpox, although he did not etire to say what it was. The steps the Health authorities were taking l were absolutely .justilied in his opinion and should lie prosecuted until the disease was stamped out.
