I —* - Edith Adeline Pownall was brought before Mr J. W. Poynton, ,S.M., at the Magistrate's Court this morning, and charged with having been found drunk and also with committing a broach of a prohibition order by procuring liquor during its currency. Accused, who was before His Worship on a charge of drunkenness on June 13 last, pleaded not guilty. Constable Clow stated that he: found defendant helplessly drunk. She had a child with her at the time. Sei'gt. "Willis also stated accused was very drunk when brought to the station Accused stated she had a fainting tit, and a lady passing had coino to her assistance and procured her a drink of—as yho thought- water. This caused her condition. .She denied procuring liquor., and stated she had only come from Levin yesterday. His Worship asked accused if she knew the woman who supplied her with the drink, but she replied she was a perfect stranger. Tho Magistrate reminded accused that wfi-en she was before him previously she had promised riot to touch, tlrink again, and ho had ordered her to come up for sentence when called upon. His warning bad been of no avail. Defendant would bo committed to Pakatoa for one year. Defendant: "Oh, don't do that your Worship, please" In answer to His Worship, Sergt. Willis stated the child accused had had been cared for last night by <\ persoij, who*saw accused arrested.— Mianawatu Standard.
