Urgent attention is directed to on advertisement by the Government concerning the need for precaution ■against smallpox, now believod to be prevalent amongst .Maoris and hallcastes resident in this province and the Auckland and Ilawke's Bay provinces. The following news items from ►Shannon are contributed' by our resident representative:--- (Shannon is to have a pavilion erected 011 the recreation reserve. Tenders for carrying out the work close on Monday next, July, with the County Council Chairman (Mr G. N. Stephenson). Plans and specifications may be seen at .Miss Dunekley's shop, Shannon. -Mr Hunt, the railway fetationmaster at Shannon, leaves hero for Carterton on Tuesday next. Uis place will be temporarily filled by Mr Donovan, a relieving officer, till a permanent appointment is made. Very considerable alterations will shortly be made in the railway siding to provide for the increased heavy traffic during tho approaching summer, when the 90-ton engines will be in use 011 the line. A meeting of representatives (if the choirs oi' the various churches in •Shannon was held in the Druids' Hall 011 .Saturday night. A committee was formed to get up a combined choir to take part in the competitions, to be held in connection with the Methodist Church. The Miranui Gun Club met on July oth on the club's ground, at Makerua. In tho competition for Mr W. H. Gunning's trophy (silver teapot), O. Olsen. 1\ Olsen and J. Peterson tied, each shooting fourteen birds out of a possible fifteen. In the, shoot off Mr C. Olsen won. Mr J. Smith won the- novice shoot for Mr A. C. Bradley's trophy. Tho next event takes place on August 2nd. The usual monthly meeting of the Shannon School Committee was held 011 Monday evening, the chairman. Mi- -J. Richardson, presiding. It was decided to make further application to the Board of Education for a subsidy towards a piano. 14 Tt is stated that Mrs George "Woodmass died in Palmer,s(on North on Sunday last. Emulsified Red Oil for tlie season s orchard spraying can be obtained from C. S. Keedwell's Pharmacy, in 1-gallon and 4-gallon tins.
