A motion was carried confirming the -advisa'bleness of the United Labour Party maintaining its identity. During the discussion speakers advocated a contained existence of the party, as a rallying ground for "the great, sane, constitutional, non-revolutionary majority of the -workers of New Zealand. A committee was appointed to cany out the purpose of the resolution. Amongst the speakers .in favour of the motion were Messrs G. Kowlds and D. McLaren, both '<! whom seceded from the Unity Congress. At Yavati, llaapai and Mukualofa, the ground rocked violently for two minutes and the natives were pauiostricken, calling on their gods tor aid. AUCKLAND. This Day. i Kruest Kdwiard Cooke. aged )s">, a baker residing nt Nnrfhcote. was burned to death last night in a lire which destroyed his residence. It is supposed that the lire was causer] by the upsetting of a lamp, which Ceidcs was usrtig to prepare grind. At 11 ..'SO p.m. his wife discovered tin kitchen to be in flames, and Cooke in a collapsed s/tate. with his clothing ablaze. A neighbour named Kitzpa trick made a gallant attempt to rescue Cooks, but was beaten backby smoke and flames. Cooke's incinerated remains were found thi morning in the debris.
