A notice from the AVellington Woolbrokers' Association, rivul at the meeting of Levin Chamber of Commerce last night, .should be noted for constant reference by sheepfarmers. It sets out "That anything over a -18-i.iicli pack will, after the ensuing season (IUI3-14). be considered as 'outside size,' and a charge of Is per bale, in addition to ordinary store charges, will be made on wool in such packs, , ' . The notice adds that this decision has become necessary owing to the increased amount of warehouse labour caused hv a diversitv of sizes.
Te Awainiitu Chamber of Commerce's resiilutitvi against "the shocking waste of life at level crossings on railways" was considered at a meeting of Levin Cliamber ol Commerce last night. It was favourably .received. j'M'orciicos 'being made to the extremely dangerous level crossing existed in Levin, uliciviit three fatal accidents and numerous lesser dues have occurred. A resolution on similar lines to that of Te Awamutti Chamber's was passed by Levin Chamber.
At ;i mooting of Lovin Chamber of Commerce held last night, various matters of interest to the town wore discussed. Details arc .set out in separate paragraphs appearing in today's Chronicle. The meeting was presided over by Mr 15. ,S. Lancaster, and there also were present. Messrs JT. ISroome. M. Fom'llm. D. Smart, X. ( . Iloldauay. I'". C. Roe. B. H. Gardener and G. P. Brown. Apologies for miaboitlahle absence were received from Mr A. G rover and Mr A. Deinpsoy. One matter discussed last night was tho sand drift trouble. In moving a. resolution on the subject the Mayor of Levin mentioned that one reason why the Government declined the offer of .an estate near Levin that was offered to the Government for closer settlement was the fear that neighbouring sand drifts would encroach on tho lan<l. The.se risks had existed I'm- years already, said Mr Gardener, but lately tho risk had become more acute. He moved •'That in the opinion of this chamber the Government should give some indication of its intentiitn of den ling with the question <if sand drifts; and that copies of this resolution lie .sent to the Prime Minister as well as to the member of the district." In seconding tho resolution. Mr Roo spoke of tho great uses to which reclaimed areas •>(' sand lands More being pnfc in various parts of the world. | n .Smith Australia, to give one instance, excellent yields of wheat were being got from .sand lands that had been toned up with superphosphates. This statement was backed up by Mr Lancaster, who said that the use of .superphosphates had raised the yields from these lands from -I bushels per acre up to ten and twelve. Mr Holdaway gave an instance of how certain improved sand lands on Hi is coast wovoi being used for stoekfatfening. The resolution was passod linanimouslv.
