In connection with an outbreak of smallpox at .Sydney, it appears that the iirst case occurred about April 12th. It was brought hen- by one of the crew of the steamer from' Vancouver, where a mild outbreak was experienced. The infective power ,s very low. seeing that although it has prevailed so long only GO cases could he traced whereof the majority were slight attacks.

The Hon. Mr Holinan states that it is not too much to say that it is only .smallpox in si technical sense < f the term. A majority of those attacked have returned to work, and many did so without even having medical advice. There is, however, evidence of an epidemic of chicken pox being prevalnet in Sydney at present. On 30th May the proprioa clothing factory at Redfern reported that a number his female employees wore absenting themselves»owiiig to a rash. On the same day a patient front the factory was admitted to the hospital, and iirst diagiu si.s of her case showed chickenpox. Then it was discovered that about fifteen female employees had been suffering from the same complaint. Alter exhaustive investigation, the authorities decided that the outbreak was chiekeiipox. though they felt some hesitation owing to the unusual nature of the cases. Several patients tlnm vaccinated. If the vaccination had been successful the result would have satisfied the doctors that the disease was chiekeiipox. but the actual results forced them to conclude the trouble was small pox. though of an extremely mild type.
