The Late Councillor Hannan.

Feeling references wore made (at last night's meeting of Levin Borough Council) to the death of Councillor J). Hannan, which occurred on Saturday last. In moving that the council do adjourn, out of respect to his memory, the Mayor (Mr B. 11. Gardener) said that it was a regrettable motion lie was moving, ihe lato councillor joined the council in 1909, and with all truthfulness it could be said that lie had worked for the interests of the borough. He was a keen fighter, but always a fair one; his opposition only ex- | tended as far as the council chamber, and when he got outside lie was as generous if lie had lost as he was when he had won. The loss of him was the loss of the whole cniinimity, but to his widow and laiuilv especially the loss would be great. The council's sympathy would go out to them. This was the first loss by death that the council ever had realised, though they had lost councillors by resignation and by removal from the'district. Ho thought it would be a fit and sympathetic act if the councillors Mould be the bearers of the cofiii. from the house to the grave*. He moved "That this council places on record its appreciation of tho capable services rendered by Councillor Hannan. to this council, and ex-

presses its sincere regret at li death, and convoy to Mrs Itanium a;.d Jiis family us ; lines'. s\.,. .... in their bereavement.'' Councillor Jilenknorn, in se.ondmj. t-lie motion, said he always had regarded Councillor Hannan as one ol the ablest councillors it had been his lot to associate with at tho council table. Councillor Lancaster said lie always had had the greatest respect for Councillor Hannan; lie always had been a -most helpful councillor. Councillor Mackenzie said he was not at the council table with Councillor Hannan, but from report* of his speeches and the votes he had given Councillor Mackenzie had formed the opinion that Councillor Hannan was a strong man.

■Councillor France expressed hi; keen regret for the deceased councillor. He w,as a real good citizen and showed great ability. As ,veai> went by Councillor France found his respect lor Councillor Hannan increasing—and when that wa.s tlx ease it spoke w-ell for the intrinsic merit of a num. Councillor ]\latheson spoke in appreciative terms of Councillor Hannan and of his sense of public duty. Councillor Pronse said the l council had come to the part in its history when there was a death in the family. I hat was what lilt; alwavs had in its way: and when all was said, it was not the worst of fales di«' in harness. The late Councillor Hannan was clearminded, business-like. fearless ii what lie had to say. and what lie considered right he stood by. The j council had lost a good man, and they all had deep sympathy lor his widow and family. Councillor Denipsey said he had not known Councillor Ha mum as a fellow councillor but lie had formal a high opinion <,|' his abilities. His was a genial personalii v ; he M as a keen debater, and yet bad a very kindly consideration lor the opinion, of others. I lie motion of sympathy was then carried, all the councillors siandin./.
