The Smyth Myth.
WELLINGTON, June 11
Commissioner Cullen, speaking on the dismissal of Constable Smyth at Greymouth, said that he was deputed to watch timber trucks on the Grey wharf in consequeuco of reports that 6erious thefts of timber had taken place.
His watch was to last till 5 a.m. 'but at 10 minutes to 4 a.m. the sergeant discovered Smytlrin the wat-ch-houso, and a falso entry in the hook that he (Smyth) did not visit the station till 5 a.m.
Regarding Smyth's statement that he'mistook tho timo Commissioner Cullen said there was a clock in the ■watch-house which regulated the hours of duty at tho station. At what time Smyth left the wharf his-'superiors did not know.
"He abandoned his post where ho was placed for a very important purpose and then aggravted his lapse by making a falso entry. Neither ■the Department nor any private employer would stand that," said the Commissioner.
