j Tlic potentialities of flax lor profit Iku'c formed the subject, of.discus .sion locally on .several occasions oi late. That there is a fortune in flaxmilliiig when prices are up is shown by the fact that after allowing lor wear and tear of machinery and the buying of the loaf flax, etc , £12 to £15 at the most suffices to pipduce ■a ton of fibre worth (at present rates) over £30. Besides this there are from five to six cwt. of tow produced to the ton of fibre. And tow is now worth between £10 and. .CI'J per ton. The query now arises: What money does the land thai grows the flax produce in a year? .Supposing that it is a good swamp, it will cut thirty tons of green flax to the .acre every three years; that is. ten tons of flax. From that. CIO worth nf hemp and tow can be produced. Even at a cost of £20. this would leave £20 per acre clear profit from one acre of flax per year, provided that the owner milled if himself.
