A Cycle Race.

$ An unadvertisod cycle road race but nevertheless interesting to tho many spectators who were "in the know," took place recently, for a valuable prize between tA\o young cyclists of Greytown, tho distance being from the Greytown Library to the Waingawa Bridge. The racers' we will call by the name of "Chips" (ho is a carpentor by trade), and ''Lovelocks" a well-known tonsorial artist), tho latter receiving ten minuses' start. The former rode a Minerva machine, and the lattor a Motocacoche. "Lovelocks," truo to the Zimmerman typo of racor, got well down on his machine, head bent forward, and a crouch of the typical "Plugger Bill" days, and at the word "go" flashed through the town at the regulation pace. On rounding the bend he let her out, and flashed past the Waiohine like a bird on the wing. Passing through Carterton ho eased off a bit, and then, out on the Taratahi Plain, lie espied another motorist gradually gaining on him, so he lot the machine go at top speed. This "chaser" was not "Chips," oh dear no! He started off well, but near Ahiakouka the is«gneto bo-

came over-excited, or rather worked loose, and timo was lost. Being a ridor comprised of that grit and determination that made Arnst so famous in the cycle world, ho quickly rectified matters, and with leaps anrj bounds tho machine sped on it way.. Soaring tho Royal Oak Hotel, however, trouble again loomed alieadthe machine broke down completely Tho heavy weight and the excessive rate of speed—not 100 miles r,n hour—had told its tale and the machine refused to budge. Spanners were brought into nee. nuts adjusted, tho oil-can freely used, but despite all this tho machine romained obdurate. Meanwhile "Lovelocks" was coming quietly home (having completed tho distance in 25mins), and, being a truo sport, came to the rescue. Tho race resulted in tho victor towing his rival homo—a magnificent finish!— Standard.
