I [VHH PttKBS ASSOCIATION.j CAIITERTOX CITIZEN DEAD. CAR.TEH.TON, This Day. Obituary—George William Deller, a 'prominent resident of the town, and formerly mayor for a period of nine years. He died last night, aged 59. LIGHTNING AT PALMERSTON. PAI/MEBSTON -N., This Day. A terrific thunderclap startled local residents at about 7 o'clock this morning. It was discovered later that lightning had struck two big trees in llangitikei street and splintered them to matchwood, bored a big hole in the earth, ripped up the footpath, and burst the kerbing. No one was hurt. A severe hailstorm was experienced during the night. CAR HIT -.BY LOCOMOTIVE. DANNEVIRKE, This Day. At the dangerous Piripiri crossing, shortly before 1 o'clock, a car was being driven I>y a young man named Dean, of Wellington. It contained Miss E. Sweetapple, of Napier. When crossing the line is was struck by an engine and smashed to' matchwood Dean was seriously injured about flip head. He was brought to Dnnnpvirke for medical attention. Miss Sweetapple had a miraculous escape, being practically uninjured. Dean died four hours after admission to the Dannevirke Hospital. DANNEVIT?KR, This Day. Regarding the motor fatality at Piripiri crossing yesterday, it transpires that Roy Horace Dean (son of the late Kdwin Harland Dean, solicitor, of Wellington) was returning from a visit to his mother in Wellington. He had been presented with a ear. and was motoring through to Napier. Miss Sweetapple was his fiancee. She came from Napier and joined Dean at Dannevirke. Slip was in his company only half an hour when the accident occurred. An inquest will be held to-morrow, and the funeral "•ill take place at Wellington on Friday. Deceased was 21 years of a^e TROTTrXG MEN AT LAW. CHRKSTCHURCH, This Day. .U the Supreme Court, in the case of Taslcer v. Clinton, a claim for L'b'OO damages, arising out of the scratching of the trotting marc Lady Olniv for all engagements nt the spring meeting of the Metlinpolitan Trotting Club, the jury found for plaintiff, for the sum of 1>350. Tasker was the trainer, and Clinton the owner, of the mare, and they had ■in agreement : share her winnings. Tasker failed to accept for the mare in the New Zealand Trotting Cup. for which Clinton had hacked her. Clinton retaliated by the mure for all engagements
