EVENTS IN SHANNON (Chronicled by Our Resident ilopre6entative). Mr P. Gills's little girl, who was burnt by her clothes catching fin , on Thursday, died before she could bo taken to the Otaki Hospital . A coroner's enquiry into the circumstances was held by Mr Eraser on Friday afternoon. From the evidence taken hy him it appeared that Mrs Gill had only been outside for a few minutes, having left the child looking at a book in the kitchen. When be returned she found the child wftli its clothes in (lames. She smothered the flames and ran with the child to a neighbour, who culled in the aid of Mrs Boulthoe. the chemist's wife, who did all she could to relieve the little suffered till T)r. Adams arrived. The verdict of the enquiry was that the child died from shock, the result of burns accidentally received. FLAXMILI.EKS , SOCTAL. A very enjoyable and successful "social' , and dance in collection with the Flaxmillors' Union was held in the Druids' Hall on Friday evening. Mr Wiggins and Mr Vcel acted as M.'s C and Mr Kerry Homer was an efficient pianist. Dancing was kept gomg merrily till a late hour. The chief feature of the gathering was an address by Mr Parry, the Organiser of the Flaxniillers' Union, who explained his scheme of working. WJien first engaged as Organiser of the Unions he had launched a .scheme for the purpose of effectively dealing with the. various scattered unions. «nd bring them all in touch with one another, so as to enhance their common interests. Committees were .set up at each centre to carry forward the work, and. side by side with these, ladies' committees \wvo also set up foi the purpose of getting up social entertainments, bringing the people together to strengthen the bonds of unity, .so essential to the labour movement. The present social was an outcome of this work, and Mr Parry pointed out how successful similar functions had been in Foxton and Tokomaru. and the splendid work of the women committees in those centres in advertising the mooting* and carrying on the propaganda work.
