LMKUbXON North, which opposed the Win to Greatford railway deviation through selfish motives, shot at tlio Levin sparrow and hit the I'eilding hawk. Now the hawk is clawing and .scratching., and Palmerston is losing its feathers and its tcmpei. To be plain about the case, 1' eliding lias seen an opportunity to hit hack at Palmerston, over the 1* oxtoii wharf proposal, and it is doing so. The proposed constitution of a special rating area (as guarantee for the lenders who will advance the money lor purchasing Koxton whan from the Government) was mentioned this week at a meeting of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce, am. the spirit of the l'Vilding people wavoiced by one member who said Palmerston people Avere intoreste! in the Koxton Harbour Hoard, and
tliev would agitate for wider rating
ai'eas. and probably bring m Feilding and Marion to be rated mi improve the port lor the benefit ol Palmerston. Therefore Feilding would be wise to take no part in tin forthcoming meeting of delegates. The chamber went on to debate th< question, and n motion was made that the chamber participate in tinproposed conference. To this an amendment was moved ''That a letter he sent stating that tin chamber does no think it advisable to send a delegate, but expresses its
hope that the Harbour Hoard will
ho successful in its agitation for vie wharf." They needed to bo careful. he said, as to sending a delegate. If they sent a delegate to the conference they would be holding themselves liable to be rated. Tt would show that they were interested, ami if interested they would be included in the rating area. They were in terosted in the port but not in th< hoard. Palmerston people were in terested in the hoard, and they would agitate for a wider area and would probably bring in Keilding and Marton to improve the port for the benefit of Palmerston. The amendment was put to tlx 1 vote and supported by four members (including the chairman. Mr J. G. Oobbo). Th; remaining four members voted against it. The chairman thereupon gave his casting vole for the amendment, and declared it carried. Feilding therefore will not be represented nt the conference.
