j IIEPOIIT OF COUNTY ENGINEER j At to-day's meeting of the Horowhenua County Council the county engineer (Mr J. Malcolm) submitted the fololwing report on roads and works:— Te Horo .Riding. The Ngatiawa bridge is nearly fin ished at last. 1 think, under aHy circuinstances, the opening of : t cannot be delayed more than, a few days now. The edocion in the Waikanae rivei goes on. It is now -within 42 feet of breaking into the Waimea stream. 1 have advised the engineer fn chiel ifind have given orders to get an old groyue repaired. This, T think, wil. protect the threatened breach temporarily at least. 1 have inspected the Beach road, as instructed at last meeting, and 1 estimate it will cost £55 to form innd metal it to high water mark; it may he necessary to get a surveyor to verify the road line. I think the present road is about right, end if I can get any data, T may be able to. prove it myself. T propose calling tenders for main tenance metal at Wnikannp and Tc Horo, also for widening and regrading the Te Horo to Mangaone road. . The tenders con "be with by the members for the riding in about ton days. I have instructed Mr D. Mills to go on -with the fencing of £He dangerous parts of the Gorge road, and have sent the material for it. Otaki Riding. Tn tlio southern end <>t' this district the roads tare very fair, but in the northern end they are very much in want of metal. Wide tyres.—T would strongly recommend that about four pairs of wheels with wide tyres be procured at once for this and the Wirokino riding. 'Die Tokomaru riding is provided for this year. Jf we are going to insist on all our metal boing (Tarried on wide tyres (which w<: ought to), we must get them, as every small job of metalling will be penalised to the extent of two pair.l- - wheels until the contractors have got them.
WIROKTXO IMDTXG. Nothing much has been done in this riding during the month but the. ordinary maintenance. The metalling of the rondj; on tin Rullor estate is finished at last. The "Wallace road deviation is now finished in a very satisfactory mnnner, and it is much appreciated by the settlers. Maintenance metal is much needed in many places in this riding, hut the carters tare scarce, and wide tyres command a monopoly.
