M URAL RETIREMENT. OHIMSTOHURCH, April 29. I*. C. Webb, president of the Federation oi : Labour, E. J. Howard, secretary of the Canterbury General Labourers' Union and F. SOLICITOR'S BANKRUPTCY. TIMAftU, April 29. Details of a bankruptcy case, which created a sensation throughout the district, became public today through the first meeting of the creditors. The insolvent is Walter Shaw, solicitor, who, it is alleted, has been indulging largely in land speculations, and according to a statement made by the solicitors and the Deputy Assignee ho muddled the 'business. Tho unsecured creditors arc returned by bankrupt as between 50 and GO in number. The total unsecured debts are £30.603. and tho assets are estimated at £24,031. One largo transaction in which tht bankrupt was concerned with one Trevurza. appears to have been the sale of properties supposed to be wortli £13,335 for £7,500; but the purchasing company offered to cancel tho bargain on being repaid their deposit and interests and costs. About 100 creditors were present and six solicitors, representing different parties. To-day tho proceedings were practically all concerning this transaction and the meeting adjourned for a fortnight. The bankrupt asserts that if the assets and property are realised he tvil pay 20s in tho £.
