Mr A reus, of Ohau, had a rathei painful accident when repairing a bridge on Saturday. One of the beams fell on his ankle, crushing if severely. Although still in a swelled r.r.cl painful condition, tho injured member is now on a fair way to recovery. A number of cows were caught wandering on the road in the vicinity of Mr Olson's estate, hy the County Council's ranger. It is eaid that they wore very good cows, and had a fine heifer calf with them.
A very successful fancy-dress ball was given by the Kimberley ißoad Hockey Club here on Friday night. Many striking and original costumes were worn. Miss Stratton (as Queen of the Harom) and Mr Horro'iin (wis Cannibal Chief) were accordd the costume prizes. Aen If belonging to a well-known local resident, having escaped from custody, was pursued by its owner at a break-neck pace for about half a mile down the main read. Despairing of turning the headstrong animal the gentleman turned his horse homeward, having decided to leave tho recalcitrant creature to its fate. Imagine his surprise when the genMo and confiding beast followed him home almost as fast as it had gone astray. He thus returned home in triumph, amid the cheers of the populace.
OH AIT SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The annual election of the school committee took place last night, in Hie school. After tho meeting had bold' a desultory debate of a highly 'cehnioal character on the snbjeot of '"'Choppers." Mr J. MoLeavy. the retiring chairman, was voted to the chair, and proceeded to give an account of tho work and progress of the school during his term of office. He was pleased to say that during Hie year the school had gone tip a irado, and had. in consequence got another teacher. The school year bad been closed by the production of a high-class entertainment, which reflected credit on all concerned.' The inspector's report" was of the most satisfactory description. Tho sohool library had been increased by the addition of seven pounds ten shillings books showed a credit balanco of about £12 on the year's working. He wished to thank the members of the retiring committee for tho excellent spirit in which they had worked with him for the good of the school.
A hearty vote of thanks was pa«scd to the retiring committee. On the motion of Mr A. "Whiley, a vote of thanks was accorded to the teachers for the way in which fhoy had worked to produce the school operetta in 'December. In reply, Mr Henderson said that school time spent in preparing children for an operetta was well spent; that hesides developing tho artistic and aesthetic side of their character, it gave the teacher an insight into the inner workings of the minds of tlic children, which ordinary school work did not give. A bond of sympathy also was established between teachoi and taught, which was a very great aid to good and elastic discipline. Tho meeting then proceeded to the election of a new committee, tho following being elected: Messrs McLeavey (chairman), Thorley ' feecrotary). Arcns, Hanson, Davies, Whiley, and Olson.
