IN HOROWHENUA AND MANAWATU. The April number of the Labour Journal is to hand. It gives a synopsis of tho Labour market in Otaki and Palmerston North. Following is tlu; text of the report:— PALMERSTON NORTH. Tiado has been very satisfactory during the past month for both outjjitle and inside workers. Carpenters are wanted in several instances, and also a lew tailor and several experienced tailoresses and dressmakers The outlook is very hopeful. .Building trades: Bricklaying fair. Carpentry and joinery very buby; men wanted. Painting busy. Plumbing and gasfitting good, riloiiumasonry fair. Woodworking trades: Boxinaking very slack. Cabinetmaking and upholstering good. Coopering slack. •Sash and door factories, sawmilling, anil wood-turning, ets., good. Engineering trades aro very busy. Leather trades: Bootmaking (factories and repair shops) fnir. Saddlery and harnossniaking fairly good. Clothing trades: Dressmaking and millinery good. Tailoring (factories and ordor) has bcon very busy during the past month. Retail trades: Clothing and boots Fair. Drapery and groceries good. Printing trades: Bookbinding and printing busy. Moat-freezing, etc.: Slaughtering, freezing and preserving fairly busy. Ooachbuilding trades: Blacksmithing and conch and carriage building ;m> much quioter than usual. Cycle and motor trades fair. Agricultural operations: Forming, dairying, etc.. fairly busy, sufficient local labour offoring. Miscellaneous: Flax-milling j,s now in full swing; all workers fully employed. Unskilled labour: There havo been a fow callers at this offico Tor work and twelve mon have boon pent to employment. OTAKI.

Nothing of special nature has taken place since last report. At present fanners are. busy with their winter (tops. There is an abundance of I'i'wl, .stock look well, and the prospects for a good winter are very "right lor the farmers. 'J'ho shopkeepers have done thir usual stocktaking, and are very satisfied with the years work, although at present they complain of the tightness of the money market. The building bade is still vory busy, and several outside carpenters have been taken on, a number of new buildings being in course of erection, including the two new public halls. Building trades: BricklayingOnly fair trade doing. Carpentry and joinery very brisk; all hatfds fully employed. Painting fair. Plumbing and gas fitting fair; local hands working full time. Woodworking trades: Cabinetmaking and upholstering, good trade doing; local hands fully employed. Sash ,and door factories fairly brisk. •Sawmilling—All mills working full time, and .some very large orders are on hand. Engineering trades: Brass and copper smithing fair. Electrical engineering fair. Leather trades: JJootmuking (repair shops) fairly brisk; an improvement on last report. Saddlery and harnessmakiug fair. Clothing trades: Dressmaking and millinery fair. Tailoring—Plenty of work on hand, but occupiers complain of the trouble to get money in, no overtime applied for. Tailoring (order) Fairly good. Itetail trades: Clothiug—Slight improvement on last month's trade. Moots, drapery and groceries—Fair trade doing. Printing trades: Printing fairly brisk. Coachbnilding trades: Blacksmithing—All hands working full time. Coach and carriage building—Local hands fully empoyed, but money hard to collect. Cycle and motor trades—Good business doing. Agricultural operations: Fanning, dairying, etc.—There have been no applications for this class of "work. Farmers have experienced a good milking season, and the butter, cheese, and creamery factories have been working at high pressure. Feed is plentiful, stock generally aro in good condition, and high pricee aro ruling. Miscellaneous: Flax-mills aro still working at high pressure, owing to the high prices ruling, whilst basketfactories are also busy. Aerated water -works are also doing good business. Bakers and fruitgrowers also report good trade. Unskilled labour: There is no demand for this claes of labour; local hands can more than meet the demand.
