The Chronicle. PUBLISHED DAILY LEVIN. SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 1913. AN EXHAUSTED STATE COAL MINE.

The purchase by the Government of the Seddonville State coal mine wa.celled unwisdom on a great many grounds. AYo do not remember, however, a single challenge of the venture on the most tenable ground that could have been taken—tho insufficiency of tho openod-up area o!' the mine. We note, however, from a recent meeting of the Westpori: Chamber of Commerce that the present working nt the State mine would bo exhausted in about a year. The Govcrninc'iit had prospected a now area with the diamond drill and found good: coal, but the cost of getting access to it would be too great There was. however, adjacent to the old Cardiff mine workings, and easily accessible, another area of 200 acres which showed a 40ft seam at the outcrop. He showed a plan of the ground and explained the matter in detail. He .said it was a hotter proposition than the Stato mine io-day. He asked the Chamber to co-operate with them in urging the Minister of Mines, when he visits this district .about tho en<l of the month, to place CI OOO on tin Estimates for prospecting thiV ground. Tt was resolved that thf chamber heartily co-operate with tin Seddonville people in placing tn~ls proposition before the Government TI?.OUT KISHIXO. Thout fishing prospects in the Manawatn were discussed at a meeting of the Palmerston Kranol. of the Acclimatisation Society. Mi Stockwcll introduced the question of scarcity of fish in the Manawatu river. He said that for the last two seasons the river had been getting steadily worse. This view was not generally bold by members, one stating that there "was a large quantity of small shellfish in tho water and the trout appeared satisfied with them. Tho other day at Longburn he bad risen fifty, and bad seen many others in the pools. Dr. Peach also agreed with the shellfish theory, and remarked that tho trout preferred this variety of diet to any other, and refused the bait when shellfish were available.
