At the A. and P. .Show, the higli jump was won by Kadiiun, who cleared .six feet four inches. Desmond was .second. Tlio ferry hands' strike alf eel ed the attendance materially. It is estimated that the services now suspended carry forty-five thousand people on a public holiday. North Sydney is most seriously inconvenienced. The pinch was badly left this morning, hundreds of ■ workers being blocked from reaching employment by the usual routes. The reason why the .Manly men were not joined with the strikers yesterday was that they woro members of a different union, and were not informed of the strike until large numbers of the public had been carried to the seaside resort. They were prepared to come out at noon, hut influenced by an appeal of the company's officials they agreed to .see the holiday makers 'hack home. According to present intentions, they will join the strike to-day. The whole ferry services then will be stopped. A special meeting of the Cabinet is called for this foruoon to consider the situation. The Hon. Mr Medowon (Premier) declined to make. a statement as to the Government's intentions till the meeting is over. The harbour presented an unusual spectacle, ivith flotillas of small craft plying across the usual ferry routes. The charges, starting at half-a-crown upwards, gradually fell to sixpence. Some win. were informed early of the pending trouble secured as many boats and launches as possible before the proprietors were aware of the "tie-up." and made a good "scoop" plying for hire. There were a few accidents, but none .serious, in the scramble among the miscellaneous fleet, and a tremendous rush for telephones by ihe niiarooned picnickers. Throughout the day many residents i)f North Shore were making a roundabout journey to the city via Hornsby. As far as possible the IVamway Department is relieving the pressure by an improved service to Lho.se suburbs reachable by tram. The iiremen and deckhands of the ['iiion primarily are responsible for he strike, but they have the sup)oi't of the masters and engineers. Che men are determined to remain nsistent on their demands.
