Robert 'Cargo, who without warning shot two men who had been driving him in a motor oar, and who has been arrested, is a man who was admitted to twelve months' probation nearly a year ago for sending a threatening letter to J. J. Craig. AN OLD MINER'S DEATH. HOKrTIKA. This Day. Albert Critchell, aged 7 4 pioneer miner, was burnt to Heath at 2 o'clock this morning through his hut at Ilium catching fire. His arms and legs had been burnt off when he was found. UNI.M PROVED VALUE. TIMAIUJ, March la. Three polls were taken in the borough to-day of ratepayers only. A proposal to rate on unimproved values was lost by (u'.l votes to 742. The adoption of a Fire Board was carried by lO'M) votes to 352. A loan of .1:7000 to provide five motor 'buses and a garage was approved by !)()7 votes to .117. The rating and 'buses questions have been the subject of voluminous press correspondence.
