County Engineer's Report.
FOR HOROWIiENDA RIDING. Tho engineer's report was read,-as follows:— To Iloro Hiding. The contractor for tho Ngatiawa 1J ridge has at last got going, and I believe lie is now in earnest; it' so, iie will finish bel'oro the next meeting of the council. I regret to say there is more slips on the Otaki Gorge road. It was reported to me on Wednesday that the road was 'blocked uear the forks, 1 sent instructions at «nco to get it cleared. The settles lwive ut Inst ioiiiul two hundred hinau posts lor lencing the dangerous parts of the Gorge road. 1 will, as soon as a suitable man for.the work is found, put it in hand. I find there is a grant of £100 on the Public "Works ksti mates ioi the .To Horo to Mangaone Valley road. I will, on Tuesday, go over the road and decide where it should he spent. T will then get the levels taken and a plan submitted. The grant for the wind cutting uear TTadfield is on a subsidy basis. Will the council he prepared with their share? Th ave had culverts laid in all the w.a terraces in fhe Gear Instate subdivision as inslructed at last meeting. Otaki Kidng. In this riding all the roads arc good. A start was made with the Maiiakau 'bridge on Wednesday morning. I hope to get it finished next Meek. 1 will get tho large culvert by the saleyards put in during the month. If we get another flood before it is done wo will lose all the metal that was laid on Mr Bevan's road. I lunve written (lie District Engineer of Railways, asking him to meet me at tho nverbridge. soutli of Manaknu. to see if wo can devise some schome to render the bridge safe for traffic. lam going to suggest that tho width lie increased six feet Inputting a six-feet bridge alongside.
Wirokino lading. The road formation at I'apaitonga is finished satisfactorily. The Wallace mad bridges ami formation is finished. and the metalling is 'being proceeded with. I have got the formation of Roslyri road about completed. The traflic planking oti the Ohau bridge is being replaced with hardwood. I will get the Muliunoa bridge erected as soon as the carpenters can get away from Manakau. The materials are now on the ground. J will try and call tenders for tlie maintenance metal where contracts are desirable to lie in at next meeting. Tokomaru Hiding. The Mangaore niad and track are getting on well. The road, I t-hinic. will be finished by next meeting ol tlie council. I have the expenditure of tlie Government grant (L'l-IO) oji the Tokomarn Valley track in hand : 'hut to get at it T had to get the road opened up as it was practically impassable. Mr Seifert is going on with the removable of the tramway from* the sawmill. He promises to make a good job of tlio road. T propose, with your leave, calling tenders for tlie maintenance metal required in this riding lor the year, the tenders to he sent in tn the councillors this day fortnight.
